The seminar takes a closer look at the recent advancements in the citizenship research and applies it to Europe. Firstly, the course will focus on contending notions of what constitutes citizenship and what normative standards citizens should fulfil, thus highlighting the conceptual diversity of citizenship. Against this backdrop, the course will explore a number of issues prevalent the citizenship research including citizenship and cultural identity, citizen-ship in the context of secession and citizenship and language rights. Secondly, the participants will discuss current discourses of citizenship in Europe such as European citizenship, transnational citizenship, post-citizenship or cloud citizenship. Against this background, the course will deal with controversies in the EU citizenship research including civic responsibility and citizenship identity.
