Biological and Soft Matter systems often posses a highly complex structure and and dynamics. This is typically the result of collective interactions between  many singly passive or active molecules which constitute the system. For an understanding of the macroscopic properties, it is necessary to have detailed knowledge about the molecular properties of the systems. This course aims at introducing mechanical and optical techniques, which can be used to analyze the structure and dynamics of single molecules in real time. This allows for example to gain insight into subpopulations of molecules or molecular states and the investigation of force-generating molecules at resolutions that by far beat the Abbe diffraction limit.
