Mapping Conflicts and Peace: Geovisualizations in (South)Eastern Europe and the Caucasus explores the critical role of maps and geovisualizations in understanding conflict dynamics, peacebuilding, and reconstruction across (South)Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. Students will engage with theoretical frameworks in critical cartography, analyze historical and contemporary maps, and critically examine their use in geopolitics, propaganda, and development visions. Through workshops, readings, and hands-on projects, the course emphasizes the ethical and political dimensions of map-making while offering practical skills in geospatial analysis to support peace and conflict studies. The interdisciplinary approach bridges geography, history, and political science, fostering a nuanced understanding of the power and potential of maps in shaping narratives and policies.

This colloquium serves to present interim results (an elaborate PhD proposal (Exposé) in the first year of study, chapters in the second year, and an overview of the results of the dissertation in the third year) of the dissertation projects of PhD candidates in the GSGAS. The aim is to discuss the terminology of the research focus of the Graduate School. The PhD candidates are therefore asked to emphasize the alignment of their research regarding the core concepts in their presentations. Active participation in the discussion and commenting a min. of one paper is prerequisite for the successful completion of the colloquium. Please register for presentations by 1 October to the coordinator of the Graduate School (phd@uni-leipzig.de).
