The course introduces in the field of comparative
media system research. The aim is to examine the structures of mass media that
are relevant to public communication (such as private and public broadcasting,
print media, and online mass media) in an international prospective. We analyze
similarities and differences between the United States of America, European and
non-Western states across institutional, politico-legal, cultural, and economic
forces that shapes their respective media systems. Research aspects include
organizational, financing, supply and ownership structures, media law and
ethics, the journalistic role and references to the political contexts. Further
more we discuss the supranational influence of international organizations such
as WTO, UNESCO, ICANN.
