The course will take a closer look at the advancements in the theory of citizenship from the very beginning of the political thinking in ancient Greece to more recent developments in the research on citizenship. Firstly, the course will focus on contending notions of what constitutes citizenship and what normative standards citizens should fulfil, thus highlighting the conceptual diversity of citizenship. Secondly, the participants will discuss newer concepts of citizenship such as technological citizenship, transnational citizenship, multicultural citizenship and post-citizenship. Furthermore, the course will deal with controversies in the citizenship research including civic responsibility and citizenship identity. Against this backdrop, the course will explore a number of issues prevalent in political theory including citizenship and social class, citizenship in diverse societies; citizenship in the context of secession and citizenship beyond the nation-state.
