The seminar focusses on globalisation and regional development in a social and societal understanding of the economy. I.e. the internationalisation of economic development will be critically discussed concerning their social and geographical implications and issues of socio-spatial justice. What are the major trends and issues shaping the current form of capitalist globalisation? To what extent is the global economy as well as the current trade regime imbalanced and what roles do different world regions play in the increasing internationalisation of economic relations? How is the global economy mediated through powerful agents such as states, international organisations and multi-national enterprises? Are there alternatives providing a different understanding of the economy and offering other potentials for more balanced, just and sustainable development? With the objective to learn about the interrelations between economic activity, regional development and societal imaginations, the seminar aims to facilitate a better understanding of how economic development "works" in Europe. Course participants will be asked to read and discuss seminal theoretical publications as well as empirical papers based on economic development in various regions in Europe and contribute to a scientific workshop towards the end of the seminar. Each regular session will consist of a lecture and an interlinked seminar based on selected readings.
