Description:
Precapitalist modes of production tend to inequality. Capitalism depends on the empowerment of labour. It therefore depends on social and economic conditions which are unstable and are not produced automatically in the course of history. Capitalism is an incidental outcome of special configurations and threatened if it does not transform the rest of the world economy. Capitalism dissolves noncapitalist structures but does not necessarily transform them into capitalist ones. The actual world situation is characterised by strong tendencies of reducing capitalism and generalising the globalisation of rent.
There is a list of introductory readings. There will be a list of texts for each session. In each session there will be a presentation by one of the students. This student will chose among the literature those texts which she/he sees most appropriate as a basis of the discussion.
