At various times contemporaries lived under the impression of being confronted to new global dynamics and so do we, it seems. There are many signs that we live in a period of transformation in which worldwide interactions and the spaces they create are changing. The research seminar investigates various fields of global dynamics: newly emerging world orders in politics, economy and culture, issues with which global cohesion and solidarities are re-negotiated, alternative thinking and practices as well as the relation between humankind and nature. For all four fields we will look at specific constellations and tendencies that indicate new directions of globalization processes. A central concern of our reflection is constituted by the question when these transformations began to evolve, and which arguments are currently made concerning what exactly shifts and into which directions.
The research seminar offers an introduction to the core aspects of the training program of the GSGAS and addresses its special emphases.
Discussions are based on selected texts which are obligatory readings. The texts serve as a starting for getting familiar with existing knowledge orders in global studies, their underlying political agendas as well as their blind spots and implicit biases. Added to that we will address the question of how to situate one’s work in current academic and public debates and how to position oneself vis-à-vis normative tendencies.
