This course is
designed to prepare students for the translation of texts (mainly from German
into English) with appropriate lexico-syntactic means. The classes will
primarily focus on the translation of journalistic texts although some time
will be given to the translation of academic and literary texts. The classes
are designed to hone production of English, with specific attention paid to
grammar and fluency.
Students will learn about (i) the features of different text types, and the
differences between German and English texts from various fields; (ii)
effective use of online translation aids, including dictionaries, corpora and
parallel texts; (iii) the translation of reported speech, and conditional
structures; (iv) necessary structural shifts owing to differences in the
grammar or culture of the target language.
