Course Description:

The lecture will critically reflect the notion of ‘development’ in the context of global entanglements as perceived by academia and development practitioners. An overview about the history of ‘development’ will set the stage for addressing underlying assumptions of different schools of thought and their reflectance in theories about economic development. Following that, the issue of growth and its measurement will be discussed with a view to its intellectual origins, upgraded by possible alternative approaches. This is closely linked to the discussion about the role of natural resources in economic development. In the end, a look at alternative conceptualizations will provide the platform to discuss the future link between development and sustainability studies.
