The seminar deals with systemic economic transformations in Central and Eastern Europe over the past three decades, from the 1990s "transition" from state socialism to capitalism
to the region's subsequent peripheral integration into the broader European economy and the present-day challenges arising from this. The content of the seminar is structured the-
matically, dealing with major issues such as property relations, dependent development, the welfare state, public finances, or organized labor. Such complex topics are approached
from the standpoint of political economy, rather than economics per se, necessarily linking economic developments to sociological and political ones. Moreover, while theoretical fun-
damentals are important, the seminar prioritizes empirically relevant discussions over high-level abstractions, allowing participants to obtain an adequate grasp of concrete issues
concerning the present and recent past of Europe's Eastern periphery.
