Cultural Identities and the Classroom: Education in the UK

This course will use past and present debates concerning education in the UK to prompt students who are planning to become teachers of English to brush up their knowledge and understanding of historical, political and social developments in the UK and to apply Cultural Studies theories and analystical methods to a variety of cultural texts. Taking into account students' specific interests, this may include the investigation of differences between the school systems of the four nations, the discussion of links between class and education, and the analysis of power structures underpinning the teaching of 'British values'. Thereby, students shall also be encouraged to use Cultural Studies concepts to reflect on their future teaching practice.
