This course will examine the capacity of film as a medium to deepen our understanding of visually religious worlds, as well as the study of religion as a discipline. A diverse range of films -from mainstream blockbusters to experimental documentaries- will be screened and discussed. Thematic subdivisions coupled with relevant texts in the study of religion will prompt students to critically examine questions around the debates within the field; such as the construction of the binary between science and religion, or between the sacred and the profane. Importantly, the course will promote the integration of diverse methods to the study of religion through film, i.e. sensory ethnography and visual anthropology. Course material is available on Moodle. For examination requirements, please refer to the module in which you are taking the course. If you need any accommodations, feel free to reach out!
