In this reading (in total: 3 SWS), we will focus on the translation of a Bhutanese commentary from the 13^th rJe-mkhan-po Yon-tan-mtha’-yas (1724–84), the Nges don phyag rgya chen po la dris pa’i gsung lan ’og min ston pa’i zhal lung on the Phyag rgya chen po las brtsams pa’i dri tshig grub pa’i mdung rnon, the 9^th rJe-mkhan-po Shākya-rin-chen (1710–59)’s influential root text about the Mahāmudrā controversy. We will analyze the interpretation of Mahāmudrā within the Bhutanese ’Brug-pa-bka’-brgyud tradition (Tib. lho ’brug). The Mahāmudrā controversy was initiated by Sa-skya Paṇḍita Kun-dga’-rgyal-mtshan (1182–52) in the 12^th century and is one of the most important philosophical debates in Tibetan intellectual history. This commentary addresses all important aspects of the controversy; the focus this term being on the 7^th chapter about respect and devotion towards the Guru (Tib. mos gus) and the soteriological role of the Guru-disciple relationship. In the Übung (1 SWS), grammatical, semantic, and codicological/paleographical characteristics of the text; the localization and contextualization of quotations of Indian/Tibetan works; and the historical and biographical context will be addressed.
