In this seminar, we will read novels and poems that transform realist worlds into their own personal mythos, merging what many would call magic and dreamscapes with natural occurrences often taken for granted. How and why do writers navigate the terrain of the magical and surreal when telling their stories? What historical precedents exist and what conversation exists between the past and present? We will look at political and cultural reasons for this writing style and how realism may miss the mark when dealing with the challenging realities in which we live
