Health and illness represent fundamental life chances and risks and are therefore an important subject in sociology. The lecture introduces the basic questions, concepts, methods and empirical findings in the field of health sociology. We will address the social construction, production and organization of health: How can health and illness be understood as symbolic constructions? What social patterns does the distribution of health and disease follow? What measures can institutions and organizations undertake in order to maintain and restore health, and how do these impact on collective health chances and individual health lifestyles?
