This course seeks to explore the role of “East Asia” in (post) colonial world orders from a twofold perspective. On one hand we will examine the methodological impact, which scholars and thinkers from “East Asia” have on narratives on the (post) colonial world and its ordering. On the other hand, we will ask how the role of “East Asia” in histories of imperialism and decolonization is depicted and discussed in international historiography. Thereby we periodically will focus on the transformations from the 17th to the 21st century. Special knowledge in the field of East Asian History is not required.
