This reading class (in total: 3 SWS) will focus on an introduction to Tibetan and Bhutanese Madhyamaka philosophy and Tibetan verse works. We will translate a bsdus don work by the 69th rJe-mkhan-po dGe-bshes-Brag-phug-pa dGe-’dun-rin-chen (1926–97), the dBu ma’i bsdus don lta ba’i me long with occasional consultation of the extended commentary, the dBu ma’i bsdus don gsal byed lung gi phreng ba. We will analyze different Tibetan literary genres, such as sa bcad and bsdus don, and study the specific reception of the Madhyamaka philosophy in the Bhutanese ’Brug-pa-bka’-brgyud tradition (lho ’brug), which is influenced by prominent ris-med thinkers such as ’Ju Mi-pham rNam-rgyal-rgya-mtsho (1846–1912). In the Übung (1 SWS), grammatical, semantic and codicological/paleographical characteristics of Tibetan texts; the contextualization of quotations of Indian and Tibetan works; and the doctrinal, literary, historical and biographical context will be further examined.
