African economic history is experiencing a resurgence. This seminar explores current topics and debates in the economic history of Sub-Saharan Africa for the period 1800-2000. Methodologically, the course invites students to critically assess both qualitative and quantitive empirical contributions to the “new economic history of Africa.” Additionally, the seminar seeks to demonstrate and discuss the multitude of new data sources in African history. We will use the seminar to develop your own research papers in African economic history.
This seminar needs to be taken with 03-AFR-2132.SE01 Debates about development in Africa. The concepts and theories of both seminars inform and complement each other, providing a comprehensive framework (and agenda) for understanding the historical and contemporary dynamics of African economic development.
