The course aims to outline and illustrate principles of grammatical analysis, addressing itself to the structure of English sentences. Syntactic functions and categories will be described and related to each other in the hierarchical phrase markers of simple and complex sentences. Participants are expected to read the respective chapters of the textbook before the seminar, in which we will discuss the essentials and analyse isolated sentences as well as sentences within texts.
