In this course, we will look at various modern and contemporary articulations of historical traditions in the philosophy of right, focusing on the idea of individual or private right. Such contemporary articulations include, for instance, recent attempts to reinvigorate the Kantian tradition in the philosophy of right by Weinrib and Ripstein. Similarly, Anscombe and Thompson have attempted to do the same for the so-called natural right tradition. Finally, the third cluster of positions we will investigate are contemporary criticisms of the idea of individual right that harken back to Marx. Questions addressed will include the nature and justification of right, as well as the relation between right and other spheres of normativity.
