The lecture deals with basic biosynthetic principles and metabolic intersections of primary and secondary metabolism. It includes mechanistic analyses of biosynthetic pathways to medically important natural product classes (e.g. terpenes, polyketides, peptides, alkaloids). Principles of natural product discovery and biosynthetic engineering will be covered. You will learn how to identify building blocks of natural products, build biosynthetic proposals, and suggest enzyme mechanisms.
