This class will provide students with an understanding of the international human rights system as established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The first half of the course will cover the formation and doctrine of human rights law, looking at both civil & political rights and economic, social and cultural rights. The second half of the course will focus on enforcement, including discussion of treaty bodies, United Nations Special Procedures and interaction with regional human rights bodies like the European Court of Human Rights. Two special classes are focused on practical application: one on human rights practice in general and one on rights during the global pandemic.
