This module is a unique offer, consisting of 1) an online lecture series on Thursday evenings and 2) a bi-weekly offline reading seminar (90min). In the lecture series, students and teachers of anthropology reflect on the colonial past of their discipline, to discuss genealogies of anti-colonial knowledge production, as well as to engage with current attempts at reappraisal and, in particular, to explore new forms of global cooperation. On the one hand, Decolonizing Anthropology draws attention to the ongoing need to decolonize the discipline's own bodies of knowledge, i.e. to deconstruct colonial and hegemonic forms of knowledge. On the other hand, Decolonizing Anthropology focuses on the methods, forms of knowledge, and practices that can support the process of decolonization.

The lecture is jointly organized by departments of anthropology in German-speaking areas and is aimed at students of all qualification levels (BA, MA students, PhD students) as well as researchers and teachers. Among other things, the lecture series aims to address issues currently being discussed in relation to museums, archives, and collections, for example, the history of a mass removal of objects and the persistence of colonial structures. These discussions tie in with and aim to address, for example, the worldwide "Black Lives Matter" movement, the film "Measures of Man," or the controversies surrounding the Benin bronzes.

Expectations & Examination (Prüfungsleistung): Students are expected to carefully prepare the assigned readings and participate actively in class. The student assignment is a written term paper to be submitted by 31 March 2024. The word length depends on BA/MA status and ECTS to be achieved: i.e. 

BA (5 ECTS): 3,000 words | MA (5 ECTS): 4,000 words | MA (10 ECTS): 8,000 words
