In this seminar we will examine the work of the influential analytic philosopher Donald Davidson, focusing especially on his seminal and connected contributions to the philosophy of language and the philosophy of action. Each week we will read one of Davidson’s papers in the original English, and it is therefore expected that the discussion will take place for the most part in English. Alongside some of Davidson’s concrete proposals in specific domains, we will also discuss his broader views on the mind, metaphysics, and philosophy itself. It is hoped that the course will at once serve as a bridge to other parts of analytic philosophy, and connect up with the central themes of classical German philosophy.
