It is natural to distinguish two different ways of being related to the world.  We can be affected by the world, in perception.  And we can affect the world, in intentional action.  This seminar is about intentional action.  It proceeds by way of a close reading of G.E.M. Anscombe’s classic work, Intention.  As we shall see, Anscombe’s work is concerned not merely with intentional action, but with what it is to reflect philosophically on intentional action in the first place.  It explores a range of fascinating and fundamental issues, most notably: the relation between intentional action and time; the relation between intentional action and ethics; and the idea of a distinctively practical form of thinking, reasoning, and self-consciousness.
